18-year-old booked in shooting of New Orleans police officer in Mid-City


Michael Baker, 18, was booked Friday, April 12, 2019, with attempted murder of a police officer.

The man arrested in the shooting of a New Orleans police officer Thursday night was identified by police as 18-year-old Michael Baker.

The police officer, who has not been identified, was shot in the leg after responding to a call of a suspicious person at a Shell gas station in Mid-City. The officer was trying to pat down a man matching the description of the reported suspicious person, and was shot during a subsequent struggle at about 9:15 p.m., police said.

The officer was “alert and talking,” and in stable condition, NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson said Thursday night at the scene in the 3300 block of Tulane Avenue.

Baker was booked just after 4:30 a.m. Friday on a charge of attempted murder of a police officer, according to court records.
