The Essential French Quarter Dining Guide - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Killer PoBoys/Facebook

From muffulettas and lobster dumplings to po-boys and oysters Rockefeller

The French Quarter is the oldest square mile in New Orleans and home to more restaurants and bars per square block than any other neighborhood.

This list is a varied cross section of eateries in the Vieux Carre, from historic places that sell iconic dishes (Central Grocery and Brennan’s) to veggie friendly spots (Green Goddess) to over-the-top special occasion restaurants (R’evolution).

There are plenty more than the places listed here. Broussard’s, K Paul’s, Tujaques and Antoine’s are all worth a lingering visit. In short, there’s not enough time in one visitor’s stay to eat every worthwhile meal in the French Quarter, but then again, why not give it a try?

Consider this list a starting point to exploring the Vieux Carre table. Wandering through the Quarter is an enchanting pastime, one guaranteed to uncover surprising and delicious treasures along the way.

These restaurants are listed by location, not by ranking.

Clouds increase again Thursday [ Local Stories]

The Full Cold Moon sure looks beautiful, and is appropriately named! It will be a waning gibbous this weekend, and still bright for the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower.

A low pressure is forecast to form along the old cold front boundary, and will give us some rain as we go into Thursday night and early Friday. The low will then move away from our area heading towards the East.

The weather improves this weekend, and temperatures moderate. Heads up, rain chances increase Monday afternoon into early Tuesday as a cold front moves through. Turning cooler Tuesday and Wednesday.

Christmas in New Orleans: 9 Great Choices for Dining Out - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Shutterstock

Here’s where to feast on Christmas Day

In many Norman Rockwell-esque American cities, the idea of celebrating Christmas Eve or Day away from hearth and kin is unthinkable. Then there’s New Orleans, where restaurants are like family and partying every day of the year is how we roll. At this second-most festive time of the year (yes, Carnival season is around the corner), these kitchens are staffed up to take care of you, your family, and your celebrations. There are also plenty of spots that offer their regular every day menu, no fuss no muss. Just remember — whatever you eat it’s still Christmas, so don’t go cheap on the tip.

New Orleans’s Eater Awards Winners 2019 - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Bar Marilou, winner of Design of the Year | Josh Brasted/Eater NOLA

The best restaurant, design, and casual eatery of the year

Today, we’re excited to announce the winners of the 2019 Eater Awards, celebrating the best new restaurants that have made a major impact on the dining scene this year in New Orleans (as well Eater’s other cities).

Eater New Orleans, with the help of reader nominations, selected three finalists in three categories: restaurant of the year, design of the year, and casual restaurant of the year. Restaurants had to have opened in the past year (including the last few months of 2018) to be eligible. The winners will each be receiving a traditional Eater tomato can trophy and a feature story in the coming year.

Please join us in celebrating this year’s incredible group of winners that made 2019 a great year of eating in New Orleans. Without further ado, here they are.

Restaurant of the Year

Saint-Germain, Bywater

In a town where prix fixe, multi-course tasting menus don’t typically fly, Saint-Germain has struck a smart balance — part casual wine bar, part 12-seat Parisian bistro. At the wine bar or courtyard out back you’d be forgiven for having minimal expectations of the bar food menu, but you’d be wrong. From the vegetable crudités rolled in crispy wild rice to the caramelized whey to the chicken liver pate, each item surprises with its depth and flavor.

In the dining room, choose from a three or five course prix fixe meal and settle in for an artful, surprising, but entirely satisfying experience. Chefs Trey and Blake approach ingredients like white asparagus, venison, and geoduck ambitiously, while elevating more familiar elements to new heights.

Most Gorgeous Restaurant of the Year

Bar Marilou, CBD

Cozy, elegant, and playful; the swanky bar attached to the Maison de la Luz is a departure from the typical New Orleans vibe. Eschewing all things muted and antique, Bar Marilou goes bold; with blood-red walls and ceilings, rich dark fabrics, and dramatic art. It’s distinctly high-design, luxurious, and special.

Casual Restaurant of the Year

Dian Xin, French Quarter

New Orleans was severely lacking in dim sum options before Judy Ceng and family brought Dian Xin to the French Quarter. Luckily, after traveling the country and getting a sense of an evolving interest in Chinese and Sichuan in other locales, Ceng saw a need locally. And the result, a two-page menu of bao, soups, chive cakes, jianbing, shu mai, and so much more is some of the best Chinese food to hit the city.

New Indian Restaurant Brings Sweeping Menu to the West Bank - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Butter chicken, on the menu at the new Turmeric | Shutterstock

Turmeric is open in Gretna, joining New Orleans’s small number of Indian restaurants

A new restaurant in Gretna has joined New Orleans’s remarkably small number of options for Indian cuisine, offering a massive menu of kebabs, masala, curry, and biryani. Turmeric opened late last month in the former longtime home of Red Palace Chinese on the Westbank Expressway.

According to NOLA.com, Turmeric is the first restaurant from business partners Sandip Chavan and Vaibhav Chavan (no relation). Open for lunch and dinner and offering the tried-and-true lunch buffet, the long menu covers a full range of Indian specialties, from naan to galub jamun (a fried dessert) to mango lassi. It’s affordable as well, with appetizers like samosas and chicken wings all under $6, with a tandoori mix grill and fish tikki the two most expensive entrees, at $18 and $16, respectively.

Included in the handful of other Indian restaurants in New Orleans are longtime Uptown buffet Nirvana, Marigny cafe Silk Road, and Metairie’s Taj Mahal. The last major addition to the city’s Indian cuisine scene, Saffron Nola, has become a top dining destination in New Orleans since opening in 2017.

A little cooler this weekend [ Local Stories]

Hit a record high Friday at the Airport. The high was 84. Old record was 82 set in 2013. .05" of rain fell at the Airport.

Watching a stronger cold front moving our way Tuesday. Looks to move through around noon. Expect rain with this system. Highs will be in the upper 60s, and then cooler weather for Wednesday with highs in the upper 50s. Both the Euro and GFS Models show an area of low pressure forming on the old front and moving our way Friday with rain and storms. This is far out, so it is something to monitor.
