BRG Hospitality Taps Longtime West Bank Thai Restaurant for Next Project - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Banana Blossom’s roti and BB curry noodle with shrimp | Banana Blossom/Official

BRG Hospitality is partnering with Gretna’s Banana Blossom for a new Uptown restaurant

Banana Blossom Thai Cafe, a family-run gem that’s been serving contemporary Thai food on the West Bank for a decade, is partnering with BRG Hospitality for a new Uptown restaurant, reports Ian McNulty. The as-yet unnamed establishment will take over the space formerly home to Warbucks, a BRG (formerly Besh Restaurant Group) project that closed last summer after just eight months.

Owner Jimmy Cho opened Banana Blossom in a Gretna strip mall in 2009, relocating to its current, bigger home two years ago. On Wednesday, Banana Blossom’s Facebook page showed a photo of Cho and BRG founding owner John Besh at the West Bank restaurant with a caption reading, “our new regular customer.”

Our new regular customer

Posted by Banana Blossom on Wednesday, January 29, 2020

Cho told McNulty that while the restaurant will focus on Thai cooking it will be different from Banana Blossom — “more of what you’d have if you came to my mother’s house.” BRG chief executive officer Shannon White told McNulty that further details will be announced “after Mardi Gras.”

Besh’s restaurant group was renamed BRG Hospitality two years ago after dozens of reports of sexual misconduct within the company and a very public split from Saba chef Alon Shaya. Besh stepped down as CEO amid the scandal, but as of November 2018 remained an owner in the group that operates seven restaurants in New Orleans.

The first restaurant to open under the rebranded company’s portfolio was Warbucks, a ‘skate-inspired’, modern comfort food spot led by chef Todd Pulsinelli. Since its closure in July, BRG has opened a second location of Pizza Domenica in Mid City.

The announcement of the forthcoming restaurant comes on the heels of yesterday’s news that one of the city’s favorite pop-ups, Budsi’s Authentic Thai, is opening a restaurant this spring. It also follows this month’s opening of Long Chim, also the first restaurant for the former pop-up serving Thai cuisine. The new BRG restaurant will open less than a mile down the road from Long Chim, at 3218 Magazine Street.

Beloved Pal’s Pop-Up Budsi’s Thai Plans for Marigny Restaurant - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Budsi’s Authentic Thai/Facebook

Budsi’s Authentic Thai will open a restaurant on N. Rampart Street this spring

The husband and wife team behind Budsi’s Authentic Thai, one of New Orleans’s hottest pop-ups, will open a Marigny restaurant this spring, reports Gambit’s Rebecca Friedman.

Budsaba Mason has been bringing two different Thai menus — one traditional, one a bit more experimental — to Pal’s Lounge three days a week for the last three years, building a loyal following at the Mid City neighborhood bar. The new restaurant at the corner of N. Rampart and St. Anthony Streets in Faubourg Marigny will serve most of those menu items with Friedman reporting Budsaba will also incorporate specialties from the Isan region of Thailand, where she’s from, including dishes like fermented fish and crab som tam.

The couple expects to open at 1760 N. Rampart St. by the end of April this year, serving lunch and dinner six days a week. Gambit reports Budsi’s will continue its schedule at Pal’s until the restaurant opens.

How Important Are The Grammys? - [OffBeat Magazine]

How relevant are the Grammys to a musician or band’s emergence as a legitimate star?

Pretty important, I’d say: even to be nominated is a special honor.

I’d be interested in seeing the overall effect for any Louisiana band that’s 1) been nominated, or 2) has actually won a Grammy. If they don’t make pop music, then it’s probably not a huge deal.

The Grammys—if you’re in the music business—evolved (and have been hyped) as the ultimate prize and doorway to one’s future as a musical star with everything that comes with that: fame, money, luxury, fawning appreciation, prestige.

Personally, I’m kind of over watching the actual Grammy Awards because I don’t live in the world of commercially-successful pop music. Fun to watch and listen to occasionally, but in another world entirely from the one I live in.

We’ve all known for a long time that New Orleans and Louisiana is “outsider” music. New Orleans and Louisiana musicians, for the most part,  just don’t live in pop-world. I suspect that they never will.

But that’s okay, I think. Music lovers who flock to New Orleans are not expecting, nor do they want to experience pop music (I’m not talking about folks who don’t really care about the music, its quality and emotional content: they experience music as a background for the party). People flock to New Orleans music because of its authenticity, honesty, its heart and soul, and depth of musical roots and traditions. I’d venture to say that pop music in New Orleans may be anathema to people who visit us to experience music. In fact, should the Jazz Fest go back to presenting all local musicians instead of including the rock and pop and their producing partners AEG present at the Jazz Fest, you’d probably have a more satisfying musical experience, but you sure wouldn’t be able to draw the crowds that the Fest needs to stay financially viable.

Pop sells, jazz doesn’t.

Country-pop sells, zydeco and Cajun don’t.

Hip hop sells, funk doesn’t.

We live in commercial world. And New Orleans just isn’t in that groove.

What do the Grammys mean for local musicians and music businesses here? Probably not that much, but it’s certainly lovely to be recognized, and an honor to aspire to. I kept waiting to hear more about Tank and the Bangas in the vast amount of publicity that I heard prior to this year’s event—they were nominated for Best New Artist Grammys this year. Didn’t hear anything on a national level. I’m thrilled that they were recognized with a nomination, but not so happy that Billie Eilish swept the Grammys. She’s talented…but is riding on a wave of hype. But that’s the way it is. Should New Orleans really try to surf that wave too?

The bulk of the Grammy Awards aren’t even given at the much-hyped awards show. They are awarded at a smaller event that the public doesn’t see. The Grammys are, if nothing else, about the exposure and cash generated by the awards show. Winning a Grammy gives you instant cred in the national music industry.

For anyone who’s been keeping track of the recent Grammys drama (recently-hired CEO Deborah Dugan was ousted after only five months after she alleged irregularities and favoritism in the voting process), it appears that the Grammy Awards could be more of an insider’s game: you win if you have the support of bigwig music industry people (who also include a wide raft of publicists who are paid to create hype and interest in an artist) who have inside access to Grammy voting.

Is that ever going to be the case for an artist from Louisiana? Do we need more high-powered music industry publicists, managers and labels here to make Louisiana music “Grammy-worthy”? Or even more radically: do we want New Orleans to turn into another Los Angeles or Nashville, with music success built on shallow (though lucrative) popularity and publicity?

Me, I don’t believe that’s what we really want. Is it all about monetary success or is it about being creative and loving what you do as an artist? Is it about jumping on the pop wagon to achieve Grammy star success or is it about making a decent living making good music that might not appeal to a least- common-denominator audience?

New Orleans has tried for years to create a music industry infrastructure (that’s how I started), but do we want to strive for Grammy success or merely a living breathing, healthy climate for all of our musicians? The latter goal certainly isn’t as glamorous as the first, but it’s worthy nevertheless.

I want your feedback on this…send me an email!

The Best Spots for a Pre-Parade Bite on Lower Canal Street - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Nited States. Louisiana. New Orleans. Canal Street The Canal Street streetcar | Marka/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

Navigating the chains and duds on the major New Orleans thoroughfare

A century ago, Canal Street was a swank retail hub for New Orleanians. The wide avenue, with its pronounced neutral ground, was home to fancy department stores like Maison Blanche and D. H. Holmes, places where ladies lunched and shopped for daywear and Mardi Gras gowns. Like so many downtown shopping streets, Canal Street floundered as shoppers hit the suburbs and the urban economy downturned. Save for the opening of the Shops at Canal Place in 1983, Canal Street lost its luster.

That’s changing. New hotels and restaurants, as well as branded retail, are transforming the street for the good. Of course, eating along Canal is also getting better. While the street has not entirely lost its grit, there is more to munch on than fast food and greasy burgers. This line up offers plenty of options, whether you are on Canal Street pre-parades, before a show at the Orpheum or Saenger, or out for a stroll. Note: the tragic and ongoing disaster at Canal and Rampart affects businesses in every direction. There’s no better time to support those folks who make their livelihood on this thoroughfare.

Did we miss your favorite spot on Lower Canal Street? Leave a comment or send an email.

Cure Co-Founder, Cane & Table Chef Team Up For Freret Street Restaurant - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Inside Cure Inside Cure | Brasted

CureCo is opening restaurant and bar Val’s on Freret Street this spring

Detailed plans for a former service station at the corner of Freret and Valence Streets from the founders of acclaimed cocktail destination Cure have been announced, and they include bringing on the chef from the French Quarter’s beloved Cane & Table to lead the forthcoming restaurant and bar’s kitchen.

Construction to turn the service station into a restaurant by Cure co-founder Matthew Kohnke first came to light in September, with proposed floor plans showing a 3,000-square-foot indoor area (set in from the street, utilizing the existing structure), and a large outdoor dining space of more than 1,000 square feet, just off the sidewalk on Freret Street.

Now we know it will be called Val’s, and will bring in the entire CureCo team, including Neil Bodeinheimer, Turk Dietrich, and Cane & Table chef Fredo Nogueira as a new partner in the group. Val’s is described in a press release as a casual spot with outdoor patio seating, bar, and “laid-back” indoor dining space. The name “Vals” was found after removing wall panels during construction.

Nogueira will build a menu of Mexican-influenced cuisine including tacos, tostadas, and ceviches, and the bar will be focused on agave spirits. Alex Anderson, who has spent years crafting cocktails at Cure, will manage the spirits program.

Val’s is expected to open this spring at 4632 Freret Street.

13 Spots Serving Classic New Orleans Hot Sausage Po-Boys - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Parkway Tavern’s hot sausage po-boy | Parkway Bakery & Tavern/Facebook

Because we know you miss Gene’s

Hot sausage po-boys have long been a New Orleans delicacy. Most often fixed with slim patties made with Pattons’ magical blend of seasoning and spices; this is not sausage found at the grocery store, and its only sold in New Orleans. The sausage is crisped on a flat top grill and placed inside fresh French bread with a crisp, light crust and fluffy center, and usually comes served with melty American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.

After the closure of 50-year old Gene’s Po-Boys last summer, best known for its hot sausage, New Orleanians spirits were down. And while many shops offer a version, here are our picks for those spots that have perfected the taste of the classic New Orleans hot sausage po-boy.

Did we miss your favorite hot sausage po-boy? Leave a comment or let us know by email.

Rain gear tonight [ Local Stories]

Scattered showers and an isolated storm possible Thursday. A strong onshore flow will develop which will cause our temperatures to go up some.

The Mississippi River is rising. Now 14.62 feet. When the River gets this high, it runs fast.

New Training Program Aims to Diversify New Orleans’s Bar Community - [Eater New Orleans - All]

Adryan Lagarde, Turning Tables student, at a Hotel Peter and Paul event January 20, 2020 | Katherine Kimball/Eater NOLA

Liberty’s Kitchen has teamed up with Toure Folkes to create Turning Tables, a 12-week bar and training program

A new bar and spirits training program dedicated to growing a more inclusive and diverse bar community in New Orleans showcased its inaugural class on Monday night (January 20), with a party at year-old Marigny hotspot Hotel Peter and Paul, home of the acclaimed Elysian Bar.

Called Turning Tables, the training is now part of the work done by local nonprofit Liberty’s Kitchen, which has been providing restaurant and hospitality training to underserved young adults for years. The 12-week program was created by local bartender and consultant Toure Folkes, with the help of a grant from the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, host of the annual spirits conference held in the city.

In addition to training, Turning Tables intends to increase “professional opportunities within New Orleans’ thriving hospitality industry” for underserved youth. It features a mentorship program that links students with veteran bartenders who provide hands-on training in their own spots; includes distillery and brewery trips, guest speakers, and a number of working events like Liberty’s Kitchen’s Come Grow With Us, MiNo Foundation’s Pass the Peas, and “Thirteenth Night is For King Cake” by Cantine at Molly’s Rise and Shine.

The event at Hotel Peter and Paul (with pop-ups by Midnight Noodle, Fowlmouth, and Las Abuelas) was the first event intended to combine food, music, and cocktails to showcase the students’ newly-learned skills and help connect them further with the New Orleans bar community.

Turning Tables is seeking mentors for its 2020 class, and prospective students can apply to be part of the program here.
