Mississippi River is rising [ Local Stories]

The Mississippi River is high and rising. Now 15.85 feet. Last night it was over 16 feet, so there will be fluctuations. The forecast crest has changed. Last night it was forecast to crest at 16.9 feet April 12th. Now it is forecast to crest at 17.3 feet April 12th. This is higher than last year. The flow rate is forecast at 1.25 million cubic feet per second. This is the trigger to open the Spillway. The trigger may occur as soon as April 3rd. The New Orleans District of the Corps of Engineers is considering recommending the opening of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway to safely allow the water to flow past New Orleans.

This past Friday we had a container ship run hard aground south of Belle Chasse. Tugboats were able to get it off the land. The levee was not damaged. When the River is high, navigation and docking is more difficult. That is one of the concerns with high fast water.
