It's 9:00 on a sultry Saturday morning, and Fred’s Lounge in tiny Mamou, Louisiana, is as crowded and smoky as a big-city bar at midnight. Nancy Wegard for The New York TimesSPICY Ragin’ Cajun presents bands like Stringbean and the Stalkers.
For a satisfying taste of New Orleans, make a hard turn off River Road at the 7-Eleven opposite the harbor in Belmar. Park the car on 11th Avenue and cut through the convenience store parking lot to the narrow sidewalk. As cars scream past with inches to spare, head around the corner to the faded old house with tables out front and a smallish sign: “Ragin’ Cajun Since 1992.”

Cajun singer-songwriter Zachary Richard has just released his first English-language album in 15 years, titled Last Kiss.
Born and bred in Louisiana, and best known for his French-language songwriting, Richard is Cajun through and through. After receiving a record deal with Elektra at 21, Richard purchased a Cajun accordion and never looked back. Since the early 1970s, he's been a key player in revitalizing his culture's traditional music, while flavoring his style with rock and New Orleans blues.
