New York 2 New Orleans Coalition

Although many NY2NO organizers went on their first trips down to New Orleans with their schools, the students realized that they wanted to create a coalition separate and free from the usual administrative power of adults and that brought together youth from across New York City. Following this demand NY2NO was formed as a student organization under which trips to New Orleans could be organized. Now it has become a network of New York City High School students interested in organizing and mobilizing around the parallel struggles of New Orleans and their own communities.

Gulf Aid to Benefit Area Fishermen Sunday. John Legend added to line-up | Offbeat Magazine

This Sunday, May 16th, musicians will unite at Gulf Aid, a benefit concert to raise funds to assist Gulf Coast fisherman presented by WWOZ, Mardi Gras World, SDT Waste and Debris, Rehage Entertainment and others.

Headliners are: Lenny Kravitz and Mos Def — Also appearing are: R&B singer John Legend, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Steve Riley and The Mamou Playboys with Jon Cleary, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Marcia Ball and Shamarr Allen and many others!

Tickets are on sale now at elevate.com for the show, which will take place Sunday from noon-10 p.m. at Mardi Gras World River City on the banks of the Mississippi River. The show’s a benefit to raise money that will help families affected by the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as raise awareness of the fragility and importance of the Louisiana wetlands.

Funds will be distributed with a focus on two key elements of recovery: coastal environmental issues and the well-being of fishermen and the regional seafood industry.
