The infamous $90,000 in cash found in the freezer of a former Louisiana congressman accused of taking bribes is evidence of nothing more than a failed FBI sting, a defense lawyer told jurors Tuesday.

FBI ranks New Orleans #1 for Murders

Stats show crime, murder down in New Orleans

The New Orleans Police Department sent out crime statistics Friday afternoon in an e-mailed news release. The rape and assault categories show the largest decline, last year there were 65 reported rapes compared to 115 reported in 2007, a 43 percent drop. Violent crimes dropped 17%, and property crime dropped 5%. READ STORY

New Orleans on worlds highest murder rates

Foreign Policy magazine, estimates that New Orleans has on average from 67 to 95 homicides per 100,000 per year. The 67 figure is from the New Orleans Police Department and the 95 figure is from the FBI, Foreign Policy reported.

New Orleans' average murder rate puts it in the company of cities like Cape Town, South Africa, which averages 62 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants yearly, and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, which averages a murder rate of 54 per 100,000 people, according to statistics compiled by Foreign Policy.
