A New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Affair in Washington DC | The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc.

U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) is the honorary chair of an exclusive Jazz & Heritage Foundation fund-raising concert in Washington, DC, featuring the legendary New Orleans pianist Henry Butler on March 18.

Henry Butler, an eight-time W.C. Handy Award nominee, is a New Orleans piano legend. Classically trained in both piano and voice, his free-wheeling style combines the refinement of McCoy Tyner with barrelhouse blues and influences from such other eclectic New Orleans piano maestros as Professor Longhair and James Booker.

His performance in Washington on March 18 is in support of Fans of the Fest, the membership arm of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

The Jazz & Heritage Foundation is the nonprofit organization that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. The Foundation uses the proceeds from Jazz Fest - and other funding - to support the music and culture of Louisiana. New Orleans Jazz Fest Daily Schedule for 2010

Added on Sunday, April 25: Juan Luis Guerra y 440, a Dominican singer who has sold over 20 million records and won nine Latin Grammy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and two Latin Billboard Music Awards.

Moved to Saturday, May 1: Band of Horses will not appear during the first weekend of the Festival as previously listed.

Scratched: Gil Scott-Heron, previously announced for the Festival, will not appear this year.

New Orleans Winterland of Jazz Concert

Support the students of the Heritage School of Music by attending the Winterland of Jazz fund-raising concert on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Jazz & Heritage Center.

This is a fund-raising concert to support the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, a free after-school music program of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

Date: Sunday, Dec. 6
Time: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Location: The Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart St.). Map.
Admission: $10

Celebrate the students and faculty of the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music - a free, after-school program that for 19 years has taught the youth of the New Orleans are the fundamentals of jazz performance.

Outstanding young musicians will perform, as will groups comprised by their all-star faculty, including: Edward "Kidd" Jordan, Edward Anderson, Kent Jordan, Brent Rose, Jonathan Bloom, Leah Chase, Jesse McBride, Brian Quezergue, Geoff Clapp and Peter Harris.

The Winterland of Jazz concert is a fund-raising event organized by the Friends of the Heritage School of Music, a support group led by parents of our students. For information about becoming a member or making a donation, please send us an e-mail.

WWOZ 90.7, a listener supported volunteer based community radio station sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage has released an iPhone app for its listeners. Other radio stations have streaming apps but usually within an umbrella of a larger group (e.g. iHeart Radio). But WWOZ looks like they want to have a little more control over their app with a branded background and simple controls...

In 2007, at age 81, he sold Festival Productions, the firm that had produced the jazz and folk festivals in Newport, to a new company called Festival Network.

When he sold the company, he also sold the building his office was in, his piece of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and a house he and his wife, Joyce Wein, owned in France

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival accepting 2010 band submissions

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is looking for bands to perform at next spring's festival.

Jazz Fest will accept press kit submissions from bands through Oct. 1.

The festival, which seeks to preserve, promote, perpetuate and encourage the culture of New Orleans and Louisiana, presents more than 500 performances during the seven day event. Approximately 90 percent of the bands chosen to perform are Louisiana-based attractions. Competition for the remaining slots is highly competitive.

Those wishing to perform should submit a press kit which includes a recording, biography, photo, press clippings, contact information and a current e-mail address. All bands that are chosen for the 2010 Jazz Fest will be contacted after the October 1st deadline. Once all bands are selected and booked, the festival will send email notification to all groups that were not selected for 2010.

Louisiana folk artist William Hemmerling dies at 66 | chicagotribune.com

Southern folk artist William Hemmerling, whose artistic creations using simple pieces of discarded wood and metal earned him acclaim, has died after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 66.

In 2005, the Chicago native was selected to create the poster for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which featured jazz cornetist Charles "Buddy" Bolden. He's also been honored by the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Northshore Regional Endowment for the Arts and the African American Heritage Museum in Aurora, Ill.
