Volunteers help replant trees in eastern New Orleans wetlands | NOLA.com

More than 100 volunteers, organized by the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, tramped through mud in eastern New Orleans on Saturday, planting about 250 trees to help restore a wetlands forest decimated by Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters.

Before the storm, the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center, along with the surrounding forest land, was a top urban nature center.

Disappearing Wetlands Taint New Orleans’ Rebound From Katrina | Bloomberg.com

The destruction of lush wetlands accelerated four years ago last month, when Hurricane Katrina struck. The third-deadliest storm in U.S. history claimed more than 1,800 lives, displaced 1 million residents and damaged more than half of New Orleans’ housing stock. Katrina also wiped out 80 square miles of marsh within hours, four times the amount lost by the entire state in a year.
